UNITED'S MIDFIELD OPTIONS

  • We are told United have made a £40m bid for Eric Dier, but that has not been confirmed by either club. Tottenham are in a very strong position as they don't want to sell and Dier signed a new five-year contract last September.
  • Marco Verratti was not on United's list of summer targets, but that might have changed. The PSG midfielder has switched agents and signed up with Mino Raiola.
  • Renato Sanches was not on United's original list either. He's been told he can leave Bayern Munich for £42m and has the same agent as Jose Mourinho in Jorge Mendes.
  • Nemanja Matic is available and Chelsea are willing to sell him to United. But we are told clubs in Italy - like Juventus - want him more than United at the moment.
  • Another midfielder United have looked at is Roma's Radja Nainggolan. We reported in May that talks had been held about signing him. But at the moment he is much more likely to sign a new contract at Roma

More than one million votes were cast for 50 nominees in 10 categories. The glittering gala evening, which was held at Sandton’s International Convention Centre, was hosted by Bonang Matheba.     Captain Alexander Akopov (inset) who works for the Turkish company, AtlasGlobal, has been awarded an 'Order For Courage' after landing the hail-damaged passenger plane (top right and left) at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport during a fierce storm on Thursday. He saved the lives of 121 passengers and 6 crew members by landing the Airbus A320 after unforgiving winds, rain and hail pummelled the dented nose of the jet. A video (left) emerged today of the speedy landing showing the red and white jet bouncing down the runway as the pilot rushes to get his passengers safely on the ground.

    British grandmother, 72, heartbroken after Nigerian husband, 27, is refused a UK visa after she spent £20,000 on wedding and flights

    A grandmother-of-six has vowed to continue fighting for a visa for her new husband, who is 45 years her junior, lives 4,000 miles away, and who she met face-to-face on their wedding day. Angela Nwachukwu, 72, married her husband CJ Nwachukwu in April 2015, just three months after he had added her on Facebook and struck up a conversation. The retired taxi driver from Weymouth says she couldn't help but fall for her 27-year-old lover from Nigeria, when they started talking, and is devastated that their applications for visas have failed. She says she has spent £20,000 on him, including lawyers to help with the visas and flights to visit him, but says he had repaid her half when he can. She told the Sun she'd been left lonely and isolated after the breakdown of her marriage, six months before they met online.
